Hand Hygiene

At Bluewater Health, patient safety and quality of care are the highest priority.

Bluewater Health regularly publishes performance information using indicators to measure and report on how well we’re doing.

Hand hygiene is an important practice for health care providers and has a significant impact on reducing the spread of infections in hospitals.

A provincial audit tool has been provided to hospitals as part of the Just Clean Your Hands provincial hand hygiene program. This audit tool captures hand hygiene compliance before and after patient/environment contact.

Bluewater Health supports the public reporting of hand hygiene rates. The data provides a baseline rate for hand hygiene practices in hospital over a certain period of time and is a helpful measure that allows us to evaluate our processes, identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to reduce the incidence of infection in our hospital.

For more information on this reporting requirement, visit the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s website at www.ontario.ca/patientsafety.

Chart Interpretation

The rates are based on hand hygiene compliance of all health care providers before and after patient/environment contact.

This information is updated annually based on Bluewater Health’s Infection Control Department surveillance data.
