The new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Bluewater Health (BWH) is a state of the art, 16-bed critical care unit, that provides medical care to all critically ill patients. The ICU takes care of all medical and surgical patients at the hospital who require life sustaining measures or need vigilant medical attention and specialized monitoring and treatment.
Critically ill patients admitted to the ICU are cared for by a multi-disciplinary health team involving a critical care certified physician (intensivist), nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians, pharmacists, physiotherapists, social workers and a variety of allied health professionals to ensure optimal medical care and best patient outcomes. A variety of support systems also exist to support family members.
The main mission of the ICU at BWH is to provide the best possible care of our critically ill patients and their families. The goal is to reduce the need to send local patients out of town to receive such care, while providing the best possible medical care closer to home. The ICU at Bluewater Health is also part of the province-wide Critical Care Network and admits critically ill patients from throughout Ontario.
Family members are welcome and encouraged to visit their loved ones in the ICU and are updated regularly by the medical team regarding the patient's medical condition. Regular visiting hours are between noon and 8:30 pm. Off-hour visits are also possible depending on the seriousness and acuity of the patient's condition.
