Bluewater Health Chief of Staff Dr. Mike Haddad recently hosted Dr. John Yoo, Dean, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University, at the Sarnia hospital.
During the visit, Dr. Yoo met with the Medical Advisory Committee, President & CEO Paula Reaume-Zimmer, and members of the Executive Team to discuss existing and future partnerships with the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, including the teaching of medical students and residents, as well as local physician preceptors who are involved in medical education.
Some of the concepts discussed included:
- Medical students training at Bluewater Health for a longer time period to become more familiar with the type of care offered locally and our community.
- Increasing the number of medical residents from various specialties doing rotations at Bluewater Health, such as internal medicine, urology, general surgery, pediatrics, family medicine, emergency medicine, OB/GYN, psychiatry, and anesthesia.
- Building on the successful family medicine residency program at CEEH of Bluewater Health in Petrolia and planning for a future Sarnia-based training program.
Since 2011, many residents have trained in family medicine in Petrolia, and in their specialty rotations in Sarnia. Dr. Haddad has been in discussions with Schulich to replicate this model in Sarnia and expand our local medical education capacity.
Dr. Haddad serves as the Regional Academic Director for the Lambton Academy of Schulich’s Distributed Education program. In this capacity, he provides leadership in the medical education programs offered in Sarnia-Lambton, and works collaboratively with the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education program at Schulich.
Dr. Yoo was accompanied by Dr. Shannon Venance, Vice Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education; Rachel Halaney, CAO; and Felix Harmos, Associate Director, Office of Distributed Education at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.
