Bluewater Health Honours Staff, Professional Staff & Volunteers

SARNIA & PETROLIA – April 28, 2017 Bluewater Health staff, professional staff and volunteers were celebrated at Bluewater Health’s Annual Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, April 27 at the Dante Club in Sarnia.


In total 360 staff, professional staff and volunteers were recognized for a service anniversary from five to 45 years (in five year increments), and the careers of 58 retirees were honoured.


“Every day, I am inspired by the outstanding commitment to healthcare that I see in this organization,” said Mike Lapaine, President and CEO. “We are extremely proud to celebrate the service and contributions of our staff, professional staff and volunteers. As valuable and valued members of our hospital team, their focus on quality patient and family-centred care for the Sarnia-Lambton community is unwavering.”


This year, seven individuals were recognized for 45 years of service: Emergency Department staff member Chris Eheler, Dr. Ram Gidwani, Dr. A.K. Li Wan Po, Dr. Walter MacDonald, Cancer Clinic volunteer Joyce Manton, Dr. Pran Mehta, and Dr. Brendan O’Leary. 


Bluewater Health’s Bridging Excellence Awards recipients were also announced as part of the recognition event.These awards honour individuals and teams for their contribution, dedication and commitment to excellence while delivering exemplary healthcare to the Sarnia-Lambton community. The recipients of the 7th annual Bridging Excellence Awards are:


Values Awards


In this category, there are three recipients – one staff, one physician and one volunteer. The category is based on the demonstrated values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence (CARE).


The volunteer recipient of the Values Award is Bob McKinleyBob volunteered as a board member for eight years and continues to volunteer as a non-director committee member, and in other capacities to enhance the patient experience. During his term, Bob sat on the Quality Committee and Resource Utilization & Audit Committee ensuring the hospital is fiscally-responsible and decisions were made with the best interest of Emily in mind.


This year’s physician recipient of the Values Award is Dr. Monique Dostaler, Acting Medical Director, Complex Continuing Care/Rehabilitation/Palliative.Dr. Dostaler strives to improve patients’ quality of life, focusing on living and not dying. She has a way of helping patients and family focus on the positives, no matter how small, even in the darkest times. Her unwavering compassion is seen every day with patients, as she takes the time to sit quietly at their side and truly listens to patients and families.


The staff recipient of the Values Award is Gail Best, Charge Nurse, Ambulatory Care. Gail inspires and models the way for her team, who feel proud and privileged to work with her. She strives to find patient-centered solutions, pulling together teams to share expertise and form personal connections, leading to positive outcomes. Gail takes the time to listen to each and every staff member and patient she comes in contact with, promoting a culture of genuine kindness.


Vision Award


The Vision Award recognizes team excellence. To be considered, the team must represent an extraordinary orientation towards service to others through Bluewater Health’s Vision, Exceptional Care – Exceptional People – Exceptional Relationships.


This year’s Vision Award recipient is the Withdrawal Management Services Roll-Out Team. Since being tasked by the LHIN with the development of Withdrawal Management Service in 2013, the team has hired and trained staff, developed programming, built an evidence-informed business case and engaged stakeholders. To date the Withdrawal Management Services Team has served over 750 local individuals with drug and alcohol addictions through new day and community withdrawal management programs totalling over 4,500 visits.


Mission Award


The Mission Award is for an individual (staff, physician or volunteer) who demonstrates an extraordinary, recognized energy in the way he or she lives Bluewater Health’s Mission: We create exemplary healthcare experiences with patients and families every time.


This year’s Mission Award is Shaylin Kemmerling, Manger, Nutrition & Food Services and Diabetes & Clinical Nutrition. In her role,Shaylin uses finite resources and innovative approaches to positively contribute to patients’ health outcomes and experience. She and her team have revamped patient menu and patient food and beverage preference forms, decreasing their cost, while improving on patient nutrition, meal quality, portion size, and patient satisfaction.


“The strength of Bluewater Health is its people,” said Wayne Pease, Board Chair. “The individuals and teams recognized with a Bridging Excellence Award go above and beyond everyday expectations to deliver on our Mission, Vision and Values with exemplary care and caring. The Board of Directors is proud to recognize these deserving recipients for their dedication and outstanding achievements. By their example, they set the bar for performance excellence.”

Bridging Excellence Awards were presented at last night’s Recognition Ceremony where recipients received a bursary to continue their education and learning, a crystal keepsake award, and a copy of the video in which they were featured.
