Our History

We’ve come a long way. For more than a century, Bluewater Health and its predecessor hospitals have been caring for the residents of Sarnia-Lambton. Our organization brings together the excellence of three hospital facilities that have long, proud traditions in our community.

St. Joseph’s Health Centre

1944
In April, work began under the management of the Sisters of St. Joseph. An appeal was made to the federal Government for the release of essential building materials as there was a shortage due to war.

1946
One floor opened on, March 1. St. Joseph’s Hospital was then completed on October 18 with the Honourable George Drew, Premier of Ontario, presiding at the formal ceremony. The hospital was equipped with 150 beds and 30 bassinets.

1959
A seven-story, $2 million addition was built. The new wing provided an additional 150 active treatment beds, expanded X-ray and Laboratory Departments, new Physiotherapy Department, two new delivery rooms and four labour rooms.

1983
A Memorandum of Understanding between the two Sarnia hospitals, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Sarnia General Hospital, was issued in November. This formed a basis for each hospital’s future planning.

1984
In October, a fundraising campaign began to raise $3.7 million towards the building of a Continuing Care wing.

1990
The Continuing Care wing opens.

1996
St. Joseph’s Health Centre celebrated its 50th anniversary.

1998
St. Joseph’s Health Centre joined in partnership with Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital and Sarnia General Hospital, signified by the signing of the Strategic Alliance Agreement, and called themselves Lambton Hospitals Group.

2002
In October, the St. Joseph’s Health Centre Board of Directors unanimously passed a motion in support of one corporation to oversee the three hospitals in Sarnia-Lambton.

2003
On April 1, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital and Sarnia General Hospital amalgamated to form a new corporation to oversee the three hospital facilities in Sarnia-Lambton. On December 16, the corporation was instituted under a new name, called Bluewater Health. St. Joseph’s Health Centre was called Bluewater Health – Norman Site.

2004
On October 3, the St. Joseph's Health Care Society hosted a recognition celebration to honour the staff, doctors and volunteers of St. Joseph's Health Centre for the 57 years of service to the Sarnia-Lambton community.

2005
On March 24, Sister Mary Vandersteen, the last of the Sisters of St. Joseph, retired from Bluewater Health ending a 60-year history of
service in Sarnia-Lambton.
