At yesterday’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) President and CEO Mike Lapaine reported on a number of the year’s achievements – from a program to provide care in an innovative way to a group of frequent 911 callers and Emergency Department visitors, to working more closely with local First Nations communities.
“We remain focused on improving access, connecting services, supporting people and patients and sustaining the system for future generations,” he says.
In his remarks, Board Chair Wayne Pease praised the organization for its commitment to enhancing patient care. “From those who are directly involved in enhancing the care experience to those who are, like the Board of Directors, more behind the scenes, there is a spirit of generosity and sharing in contributing to the implementation of the organization’s strategic plan.”
Reports were also provided by Chief of Professional Staff Dr. Michel Haddad, Board Treasurer Margaret Dragan, foundations and auxiliaries. The professional accounting firm BDO Canada LLP was appointed as auditors for 2018-2019.
The featured speaker at the AGM was Dr. Dr. Jeff Turnbull, one of the founders and current Medical Director of the Inner City Health Project for the homeless in Ottawa, on “Thinking Boldly: A Case Study of Innovation in Achieving Health Equity.” Dr. Turnbull’s presentation is available on Bluewater Health’s website at www.bluewaterhealth.ca under News/Publications & Presentations.
Annual Report Available
Bluewater Health’s 2017-2018 Annual Report to the community is now publicly available. “The efforts of our staff, Professional Staff and volunteers, combined with our community partners are resulting in improved experiences and outcomes for our patients, for the benefit of our community,” says Lapaine. “Through the unwavering commitment to patient and family-centred care demonstrated by our dedicated and engaged staff, Professional Staff and volunteers we will continue to set our sights on ever-higher standards of the patient experience.”
The annual report includes links to videos depicting patient care experiences; messages from the Board Chair, President and CEO, Chief of Professional Staff and foundation Board Chairs; year-end financial statements; and brief highlights of achievements related to its commitment to quality care, outstanding performance, inspired people and exceptional relationships. Sue Denomy Leadership Award Presented
Sue Denomy was on hand to present the third annual Sue Denomy Leadership Award, which was established in 2015 upon her retirement as President and CEO. The award recognizes contributions made by engaged frontline employees who exemplify Bluewater Health’s Mission, Vision and Values in their daily demonstration of My Promise to Emily.
The 2018 recipient of the Sue Denomy Leadership Award is Ryan Robinson, RPN, who works in Ambulatory Care. Robinson received a financial bursary of $1,000 for continued professional development, made possible by a donation to the Bluewater Health Foundation, and an engraved award.
Board of Directors Appointed
Bluewater Health’s 2018-2019 Board of Directors was named at the AGM. The board comprises volunteers who give of their time, knowledge and skill to oversee hospital governance. Their work includes strategic planning, quality and performance monitoring, financial and management oversight, risk identification and oversight, stakeholder communication, engagement and accountability, and legislative compliance.
The 2018-2019 Board of Directors comprises Paul Wiersma (Chair), Brian Knott (Vice-Chair), Fred Vanderheide (Treasurer), Margaret Dragan, Bill Gillam, Jenny Greensmith, Louis Guimond, Anthony Iafrate, Katherine Mantha, Bob McKinley, Wayne Pease and Rachael Simon. Non-directors appointed to the board’s standing committees are Amar Badami, Lorri Kerrigan, Jason McMichael, Linette McNamara, Sandy Whyte, Jennifer Wilson and Kirk Wilson.
The board includes ex-officio, non-voting members Mike Lapaine, President and CEO; Dr. Michel Haddad, Chief of Professional Staff; and Shannon Landry, Chief Nursing Executive. The President, Dr. Sharon Rutledge, and a Vice-President, Dr. Enoch Daniel, of the Professional Staff Association also serve on the board.
