Bluewater Health Annual General Meeting Highlights

SARNIA & PETROLIA – June 27, 2019 At yesterday’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) President and CEO Mike Lapaine reported on a number of the year’s achievements – including being granted Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada; launching a hospital-wide initiative to improve admission, transfer and discharge processes; and introducing or strengthening a number of initiatives to support care providers.


Our engaged staff, Professional Staff and volunteers continue to set our sights on ever-higher standards for patient and family-centred care,” he says. “We remain focused on continuing collaboration with our community partners to add value to their services to ensure seamlessness and wrap-around care for our patients.”


In his remarks, Board Chair Paul Wiersma praised the organization for the role it plays in the community and with its peer hospitals. “Bluewater Health has been distinguishing itself as a leader through innovation since before I joined its Board of Directors. In fact, innovation has been embedded in the strategic plan for many years. Hospital staff, Professional Staff and volunteers have been working with community partners to enhance patient and family-centred care in unique and creative ways. This will be important in the months and years ahead.


Reports were also provided by Chief of Staff Dr. Michel Haddad, Board Treasurer Fred Vanderheide, foundations and auxiliaries. The professional accounting firm BDO Canada LLP was appointed as auditors for 2019-2020. 


The featured speaker at the AGM was Dr. Joanna Henderson, presenting Meeting the needs of youth with mental health and substance use concerns through integrated models of service delivery.” Dr. Henderson’s presentation is available on Bluewater Health’s website at under News & Media/Publications & Presentations.


Annual Report Available

Bluewater Health’s 2018-2019 Annual Report to the community is now publicly available. “We have implemented new services to improve quality of care, reduce delays and provide care closer to home for patients,” says Lapaine. “Looking to the future, we have begun discussions with community partners to respond to the Government of Ontario’s launch of Ontario Health Teams; this will be a primary area of focus over the coming months and years.” 


The annual report includes messages from the Board Chair, President & CEO and Chief of Staff and foundation Board Chairs; year-end financial statements; and brief highlights of achievements related to its commitment to quality care, outstanding performance, inspired people and exceptional relationships. Sue Denomy Leadership Award Presented

Sue Denomy was on hand to present the fourth annual Sue Denomy Leadership Award, which was established in 2015 upon her retirement as President and CEO. The award recognizes contributions made by engaged frontline employees who exemplify Bluewater Health’s Mission, Vision and Values in their daily demonstration of My Promise to Emily.


The 2019 recipient of the Sue Denomy Leadership Award is Angela MacDonald, Emergency Department Charge Nurse.


“I have been nursing for 18 years, and have grown so much as a person, nurse and leader during that time,” she said. “I have worked in a variety of settings and have had the opportunity to work with so many great people that have shaped me into the nurse I am today. I am grateful to Bluewater Health leadership for investing so much in its employees to enable this type of growth and a culture that allows for exceptional relationships between staff. I am honored to receive the Sue Denomy Leadership award and I am proud to be an employee of Bluewater Health.” MacDonald received a financial bursary of $1,000 for continued professional development, made possible by a donation to Bluewater Health Foundation, and an engraved award.


Board of Directors Appointed

Bluewater Health’s 2019-2020 Board of Directors was named at the AGM. The board comprises volunteers who give of their time, knowledge and skill to oversee hospital governance. Their work includes strategic planning, quality and performance monitoring, financial and management oversight, risk identification and oversight, stakeholder communication, engagement and accountability, and legislative compliance.


The 2019-2020 Board of Directors comprises Paul Wiersma (Chair), Brian Knott (Vice-Chair), Margaret Dragan (Treasurer), Bill Gillam, Jenny Greensmith, Louis Guimond, Anthony Iafrate, Katherine Mantha, Bob McKinley, Rachael Simon, Fred Vanderheide and Kirk Wilson. Non-directors appointed to the board’s standing committees are Beverley Hand, Lorri Kerrigan, Art Mahmoudi, Jason McMichael, Marcie Myers, Giovanni Sottosanti and Jennifer Wilson.


The board includes ex-officio, non-voting members: Mike Lapaine, President and CEO; Dr. Michel Haddad, Chief of Professional Staff; and Shannon Landry, Chief Nursing Executive. The Professional Staff Association’s President, Dr. Andre Rudovics also serves on the board.
