SARNIA & PETROLIA – November 2, 2021 – Bluewater Health has been recognized by Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network) for its outstanding efforts to integrate organ and tissue donation into quality end-of-life care in 2020/21.
Bluewater Health was presented with the Provincial Conversion Rate Award for meeting or exceeding the target of a 63 percent conversion rate set by TGLN, reaching 100 percent. This is Bluewater Health’s third year receiving this award.
Local transplant recipient, Darryl Wallis’ life was forever changed thanks to one gracious donor 15 years ago. “When I was one-year’s old, I was diagnosed with a rare and serious chronic disease that left me unable to eat any solid foods. I was only able to receive nutrition by intravenous and did so for 20 years of my life,” says Wallis. “Then I received a call for a multi-visceral transplant consisting of a new liver, small intestine, stomach, and pancreas. I am now able to eat food regularly, finished my university degree, and am now a practicing pharmacist. None of this would be possible without the gift of life.”
Bluewater Health has also been presented with the Eligible Approach Rate Award for hospitals that meet or exceed the target of a 90 percent eligible approach rate set by TGLN. This award recognizes hospitals for demonstrating leading practices by facilitating a donation discussion with eligible patients/families of patients at end of life. This year, Bluewater Health achieved 100 percent eligible approach rate.
“I am very proud of our hospital’s accomplishments in organ and tissue donation and for maintaining the impressive results of our donation program throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Dr. Glenna Cuccarolo, Intensivist, Medical Director, Intensive Care, Bluewater Health. “These awards reflect the hospital’s commitment to implement leading donation practices and integrate donation as part of quality end-of-life care.”
In 2020/2021, Bluewater Health contributed to a number of organ transplants and multiple tissue donors, enhancing the lives of many.
Today, more than 1,500 people are on the waitlist for a lifesaving organ transplant, and every three days someone will die waiting. Over 90 per cent of Ontarians support donation, yet only 35 per cent have formally registered their consent for organ and tissue donation.
“Bluewater Health has made an outstanding contribution to organ and tissue donation in Ontario and this award is a reflection of that important work,” says Judy Linton, Chief Nursing Executive & Clinical Institutes and Quality Programs Executive, Ontario Health. “The collaboration and partnership Ontario Health (TGLN) has with our hospitals is critical to saving lives and we are so appreciative of their ongoing commitment. Every Ontarian has the opportunity to demonstrate their support for this life-saving work by registering their consent to donate organs and tissue at BeADonor.ca.”
One donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation and enhance the lives of up to 75 more through the gift of tissue. By registering consent to donate, you make your family aware of your decision to save lives.
