Improves Standing by 24% on Provincial Scorecard

SARNIA & PETROLIA – March 18, 2021 – Bluewater Health is proud to announce that it has improved its Sarnia Emergency Department’s (ED) standing by 24% among Ontario hospitals.

Since 2010, the Sarnia Emergency Department has participated in a provincially-funded process improvement program with the goal of better outcomes for ED patients, and smarter, more efficient processes, so that staff can continue to deliver high-quality care with ever-increasing volumes and expectations.

“To be fourth in the province on one of our key focus areas is pretty incredible,” said Laurie Zimmer, Vice-President, Operations. “We have been trying hard to get people into the right bed, at the right time, and ensure that all our patients get quick access to the care they need when they need it. We won’t stop improving, but this is a nice nod that we’re heading in the right direction.”

The hospital’s overall provincial ranking for Emergency Department performance has improved to 26th (up eight spots) from a total of 74, as stated in the province’s Pay for Results ranking. Pay for Results is a key initiative within Ontario’s overall Wait Time Strategy that aims to reduce Emergency Department  wait times by improving processes within the ED, and flow between the ED and other hospital departments.

Bluewater Health ranks fourth across the province for Time to Inpatient Bed, which was the focus of the hospital’s recent campaign No One Waits (NOW). Since the launch of NOW in October 2018, Bluewater Health has achieved a 53% reduction on its time to inpatient bed from an average of 8 hours to 3.8 hours.

Pay for Results funding is directed towards process improvement initiatives that increase access to care and decrease wait times.
