Bluewater Health Honours Excellence and Service Anniversaries

SARNIA & PETROLIA – November 6, 2020 – This week was Bluewater Health’s Recognition Week. Normally an in-person event, the week-long tribute featured an online celebration of long service employees with milestone anniversaries, and various annual awards.

“While the pandemic prevented our traditional recognition event, we are extremely proud to celebrate the service and contributions of our people,” said Mike Lapaine, President and CEO. “As valuable and valued members of our hospital team, their focus on quality patient and family-centred care for the Sarnia-Lambton community before and since the pandemic has been unwavering. I continue to be inspired by the outstanding commitment to healthcare in this organization.”

Bluewater Health’s Bridging Excellence Award and Sue Denomy Leadership Award recipients were part of the recognition event. These awards honour individuals and teams for their contribution, leadership, dedication and commitment to excellence while delivering exemplary healthcare to the Sarnia-Lambton community.

Bridging Excellence Awards

The recipients of the 10th annual Bridging Excellence Awards are:

  • Values Awards

The category is based on the demonstrated values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence (CARE).

The volunteer recipient of the Values Award is Bob Brown. Bob brings a community and caregiver perspective to Bluewater Health. As a user of healthcare products and services and a business professional, Bob gives of himself on at least nine committees at the hospital.

This year’s staff recipient of the Values Award is Deb Matchett. Deb is the Manager of the Intensive Care Unit and Respiratory Therapy. She is passionate about her role and team, helping provide patient care at busy times and supporting others through personal or professional pressures.

The Values Award was also presented to physician recipient Dr. Evan Lilly. Dr. Lilly is a family physician working in oncology and palliative care who puts quality of life and patient experience at the heart of care.

  • Vision Award

The Vision Award recognizes team excellence. To be considered, the team must represent an extraordinary orientation towards service to others through Bluewater Health’s Vision, Exceptional Care – Exceptional People – Exceptional Relationships.

This year’s Vision Award recipient is the Maternal Infant Child Improvement Team. The team strengthened relationships, engaged all stakeholder and made significant changes to the unit’s physical layout, major processes, training and scheduling.

  • Mission Award

The Mission Award is for an individual (staff, physician or volunteer) who demonstrates an extraordinary, recognized energy in the way he or she lives Bluewater Health’s Mission: We create exemplary healthcare experiences with patients and families every time. 

This year’s Mission Award recipient is Paula Gilmore, Director, Stroke/Vascular and Rehabilitation Programs. Paula believes learning and development are the cornerstone of an organization’s excellence and encourages her team to access all available learning opportunities.

Bridging Excellence Award recipients received a bursary to continue their education and learning, a crystal keepsake award, and a copy of the video in which they were featured.

Sue Denomy Leadership Award

The Sue Denomy Leadership Award recognizes contributions made by engaged frontline employees who exemplify Bluewater Health’s Mission, Vision and Values in their daily demonstration of My Promise to Emily. This year’s recipient is Brian Slaughter, Material Handler, Stores and Distribution. Brian is a true ambassador within the Stores department, actively participating in team huddles and contributing to process improvements. Brian received a financial bursary of $1,000 for continued professional development, made possible by a donation to Bluewater Health Foundation, and an engraved award.

“The strength of Bluewater Health is its people, and by their example, these award recipients set the bar for performance excellence,” said Brian Knott, Board Chair. “Those recognized with a Bridging Excellence Award or the Sue Denomy Leadership Award go above and beyond everyday expectations to deliver on our Mission, Vision and Values with exemplary care and caring. The Board of Directors is proud to recognize these deserving recipients for their dedication and outstanding achievements.”
