Both Petrolia and Sarnia locations sporting new colours

SARNIA & PETROLIA – July 26, 2021 –Bluewater Health unveiled new Pride crosswalks at the Sarnia and Petrolia hospitals this week as part of its ongoing commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The new crosswalks are the Progress Pride Flag, designed by Daniel Quasar in 2018 that explicitly includes Black, Brown & Trans colours.

The crosswalks mirror the flag flown at the hospitals throughout the month of June, incorporating the rainbow colours representing the diversity of the LGBTQ2+ community, pink, light blue, and white stripes from the transgender flag, and black and brown stripes to represent the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of colour) community.

“Bluewater Health is committed to being a safe space for everyone who enters our hospital,” says Julia Oosterman, Chief, Communications and Public Affairs. “When anyone, be it a patient, a care partner, or Bluewater Health team member comes to the hospital, we want them to know they are entering a place of healing, caring and safety. Everyone’s rights are respected and gender identity, sexual orientation, or race should never be a barrier.”

Over the past five years Bluewater Health has intentionally increased its focus on equity, diversity and inclusion, introducing internal learning opportunities and education sessions, recruiting Board members of diverse backgrounds, instituting a Culture of Kindness, and currently creating the framework for an Equity and Diversity task force.

“I was thrilled to hear about the addition of the crosswalks,” said Brian Slaughter, Bluewater Health staff member. “It’s so important for everyone to feel they can come here to work or receive care in an accepting environment. Everyone should feel safe, no matter who they are or where they are. Adding this symbol of inclusion is an encouraging step forward and builds on the hospital’s culture of kindness.”

The paint for the crosswalks was generously donated to the hospital by Shell Canada’s Sarnia Manufacturing Centre.
