Bluewater Health Introduces New Online Patient Teaching Resource

SARNIA & PETROLIA – July 29, 2020 – Bluewater Health is now offering online videos for patients undergoing total-joint replacement surgeries. These new tools provide comprehensive information about the patient’s journey from pre-admission preparations to post-operative care, and replace classroom-style sessions. Online learning from home is an important enhancement to patient care for both infection prevention and control, and improved information retention.

“Online learning allows patients to access the educational material whenever and wherever is best for them to ensure they are best prepared for surgery, and acts as a reference point later in their journey,” says Paula Gilmore, Director of Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Therapy Services, Stroke/Vascular, Dialysis & Geriatrics. “When people learn how to prepare for surgery and what to expect while in hospital and after discharge, they are able to ask questions and feel more comfortable in their care journey.”

A cross-section of hospital healthcare professionals – nurses, surgeons, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and dietitians – collaborated on the online learning to streamline this patient information, ensuring consistent information from all healthcare workers involved in the patient journey.  Bluewater Health’s patient experience partners – volunteers with lived patient experiences at the hospital – also vetted these new tools to ensure patient relevancy and provided a patient lens.

The move to online learning was underway before the pandemic, and COVID-19 has expedited the process. As the hospital re-establishes services, the online learning videos provide ease and accessibility to patients.  As communities continue to manage COVID-19, hospitals are looking for innovative ways to deliver care via technology.
