SARNIA & PETROLIA – October 31, 2022 – Bluewater Health is pleased to announce the official opening of a newly renovated occupational therapy functional suite for patients on the Inpatient Rehabilitation unit.
The functional suite is a home-like setting where occupational therapists (OTs) help patients regain the skills and confidence to return to the day-to-day activities that are important to them. The suite holds a full kitchen – including all appliances – laundry facilities, and general furnishings of a home environment such as windows, blinds, door thresholds, and carpet. Therapists work with patients to improve their physical, functional, and cognitive strength; problem solve challenging home scenarios; promote safety; and educate on assistive devices. Often patients need to learn a new way of approaching tasks and chores with the help of assistive devices or adaptive strategies.
“This new functional suite is a much needed addition to our Inpatient Rehabilitation unit,” says Paula Gilmore, Director, Rehabilitative and Palliative Care. “The room represents our patients’ stories. The layout and amenities were carefully chosen to replicate real-life environments that our patients face at home. It’s an ideal space for patients to re-learn and practice real-life scenarios and activities, and I am pleased with how patients will benefit from this new addition.”
The suite is the product of a $55,000 renovation of an unused patient servery on the Inpatient Rehabilitation unit. A better use for the space was identified during COVID-19 when inpatients could not utilize the outpatient therapy space due to infection control practices.
Following a trial run where 100 patients retrained prior to being discharged home, the functional suite officially opened this October during Occupational Therapy Month.
“Canadian occupational therapists celebrate and promote their profession for the whole month of October,” says Gilmore. “We are grateful to our team of occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants at Bluewater Health. They are regulated health professionals, who work with patients across the hospital to help patients solve the problems that interfere with their ability to do the things that are important to them – every day activities such as self-care, work, and leisure.”
