Bluewater Health Pausing Select Procedures Effective January 11
Escalating Regional COVID-19 Hospitalizations Requires Staffing Moves

SARNIA & PETROLIA – January 7, 2021 – With community cases of COVID-19 rising and increasing hospitalizations in our region, Bluewater Health is implementing changes to normal operations. The COVID unit is being reopened, resulting in some staff movement within the hospital, which will affect select surgeries and procedures. These will go into effect Monday January 11, 2021.

Visiting restrictions were implemented Wednesday, January 6. Screening at entrances and mandatory masking continue, with medical masks now being provided to all who enter.

“We continue to adjust as needed to respond to conditions in our community and region, with as little interruption to our services and programs as possible,” said Dr. Mike Haddad, Chief of Staff.  “We are mindful of the impact these changes have on those we serve and don’t; make these decisions lightly.”

Surgeries and Procedures
Patients whose surgical procedure is affected will be notified by their specialist to cancel or reschedule their appointment. The Pat Mailloux Eye Centre in Petrolia remains open at this time.

Clinics
Some clinics at both hospitals may see reductions, and impacted patients will be notified to cancel or reschedule their procedure.

Diagnostic Services
At this time, there are no changes to Diagnostic Imaging or Laboratory services, however, Bluewater Health will continue to assess the pandemic situation and comply with Ontario Health guidelines.

“While we cannot predict how long these changes will need to be in place or if other reductions will be needed, we will continue to coordinate with our medical colleagues to minimize backlog,” continued Haddad.
