Community opinion of local hospital exceeds provincial average in key indicators
SARNIA & PETROLIA – June 22, 2021 – Bluewater Health is well regarded in the Sarnia-Lambton community according to a recent perception survey, carried out by Leger. The findings among randomly-selected Lambton County residents indicate 78% of participants report a good opinion of the hospital, compared to a provincial average of 64%. In addition, 75% of respondents indicated Bluewater Health’s hospitals in Petrolia and Sarnia are headed in the right direction. This result exceeds the provincial average of 67%. The most important features of a hospital cited by participants were experienced physicians, kind and caring staff and access to specialized care.
“Leger found 75% of community respondents had experienced care at Bluewater Health in the last year as a patient, friend or family member,” stated Dave Scholz, Executive Vice President, Leger. “Eight in 10 say Bluewater Health provides safe and effective, accessible and equitable, efficient, and patient- and family-centred care. Nine out of 10 would recommend the hospital to family or friends. The best part is 20% said their opinion of Bluewater Health improved over the past year.”
Among the Bluewater Health employees surveyed by Leger, roughly nine in 10 say Bluewater Health provides care that is patient- and family-centred, safe/effective, accessible/equitable and efficient. Three-quarters trust the organization and its CEO. The hospital’s strengths most cited were quality patient care, a caring staff/culture of kindness, frontline staff and supportive management. The hospital’s key opportunities identified by employees in the survey were a new electronic health record, more professional development and more support for staff. Notably, 24% stated their opinion has improved over the past year.
“We have worked really hard to improve the community’s impression of our hospital and the safe quality care we deliver,” says Mike Lapaine, President & CEO. “Compliments to our Patient Experience Office have increased 65% in the last 1 ½ years while complaints are down 25%. The fact that we could do that during a pandemic speaks volumes about our staff and Professional Staff. They have not wavered in their commitment to caring for the residents of Sarnia-Lambton.”
The last broad-scale community poll was conducted by POLLARA Strategic Opinion and Market Research prior to the provincially-appointed Supervisor’s report was issued in 2007. At that time, residents rated the quality of care at Bluewater Health as mediocre (5.8/10) and 61% of residents at that time believed quality of care in the community had worsened.
