Bluewater Health to Open Time Capsules, Celebrate Cornerstones

Friday, September 13, 2019 - 10:13am

SARNIA & PETROLIA – September 13, 2019 – The Bluewater Health community will revisit the past on September 27, 2019 at 11:00 am in the hospital’s atrium, with the official opening of two time capsules found in Sarnia General Hospital’s cornerstones.

Members of GFIVE Inc. found and recovered the two time capsules from cornerstones from 1929 and 1952 when redeveloping the site. Bluewater Health is inviting the public to participate in the celebration, where the Sarnia Historical Society will open the time capsules and reveal their contents before they are put on display in Bluewater Health.

The community is encouraged to predict what’s in the capsules and send their guesses by mail, through social media and on location at the Sarnia hospital. All correct guesses received by end of day, September 26 will be entered, with the draw taking place Monday, September 30.
“We’re looking forward to paying homage to Bluewater Health’s past with the opening of the time capsules, and to celebrating the hospital’s growth since the capsules were first placed,” said Mike Lapaine, President and CEO. “They’re a significant part of the hospital’s history and we are very curious to see what’s inside.”

Bluewater Health will also be unveiling the cornerstone display in the Shell Healing Garden at the event, which features original cornerstones from Sarnia General Hospital where the time capsules were found and donated by GFIVE Inc.

“It was important for us to respect the historical significance of both the cornerstones and the time capsules, and to partner with Bluewater Health to commemorate the hospital’s past,” said Marty Raaymakers, a member of GFIVE Inc.

The Sarnia Historical Society will officially open the time capsules. “Sarnia General Hospital has been an important part of Sarnia’s fabric for many years and opening two time capsules from different time periods will give the community an opportunity to temporarily rewind time,” said Ron Realesmith, President, Sarnia Historical Society. “It’s a unique way to celebrate the city’s deep-rooted history.”
