Art Therapy Plays Key Role in Patient Recovery Journey
SARNIA & PETROLIA – July 18, 2022 – Patients and families visiting Bluewater Health’s Mental Health & Addictions Service units are now welcomed by bright, colourful wall murals inspired by nature, healing, and Indigenous culture. Thanks to a generous donation from Integral HR Solutions Inc., four new murals have been installed in Bluewater Health’s Russell Building, including the Mental Health Inpatient Unit, Addictions Services Inpatient and Outpatient Units, as well as the Children’s Mental Health Outpatient waiting area.
“Previously, patients and visitors were greeted by a very stark and clinical environment,” says Director, Mental Health & Addictions Services, Donna Morreau. “We wanted to create a space where people felt welcomed and hopeful right as they step off the elevator, as we know how overwhelming it can be when you first reach out for help.”
The mural on the sixth floor Russell Building, Addictions Outpatient Services Unit, was done in collaboration with local Indigenous artist, John Williams, from Aamjiwnaang First Nation – tying in elements of traditional healing, nature, and Indigenous culture.
Art and art therapy can play a key role in patient recovery in mental health and addictions services. Art therapy focuses on replacing a negative coping technique with a positive one. “It’s a nice feeling of accomplishment and pride when you’re struggling,” shared a patient on Bluewater Health’s Mental Health Inpatient Unit. “It’s a good distraction technique, and I’ve learned a lot about new painting and drawing practices during my stay here.”
Bluewater Health offers art and recreation therapy in our mental health inpatient and complex continuing care cognitive units.
