Bluewater Health Wins One of Five National Grants

SARNIA & PETROLIA – October 6, 2020 – Bluewater Health’s Maternal Infant Child (MIC) program has been awarded funding from the Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC) Foundation’s Safety Grants Program. The $20,000 grant is being used to enhance obstetrical triage processes.

HIROC’s most recent program theme was Preventing harm in the obstetrical-perinatal environment. Of the 47 applications received, five grants were awarded, including to Bluewater Health for Implementation of an Obstetrical Triage Acuity Tool to Ensure Safe, Effective and Timely Care.

The obstetrical unit is similar to an emergency department, where unpredictable presentation and acuity patterns mean the potential for extended wait times. To improve quality of care and ensure women with the highest need are seen first, the project’s aim is to use an obstetrical triage acuity tool, to reduce time delays, increase patient flow and decrease the patient length of stay, with the goal of improved patient outcomes. The solution identified is a digital documentation process called the Obstetrical Triage Acuity Scale (OTAS). OTAS is now built into Bluewater Health’s computer system. When a patient arrives at the obstetrical unit, the nurse’s computer displays all the pertinent questions to ask the patient.

HIROC is a not-for-profit organization which provides insurance, risk management and innovative solutions supporting safety and collaboration in healthcare. The Safety Grants Program is an annual initiative created by The HIROC Foundation, to provide funding support toward its subscribers’ innovative safety solutions.
