Designated Care Partner Policy Changes Now in Effect at Sarnia & Petrolia Emergency Departments

Thursday, December 30, 2021 - 8:35am

Effective 8:00 a.m. December 30, 2021

With the increase of COVID-19 cases in our community, and influx of symptomatic patients visiting our local Emergency Departments (EDs), Bluewater Health is implementing changes to our ED designated care partner* policy.

Currently, the Sarnia ED is consistently seeing a 20% increase in daily visitors from an average day. Of these visitors, many are presenting symptomatic and/or COVID positive. Due to the increase in volumes, both Bluewater Health EDs are struggling to maintain social distancing in our waiting rooms.

To help with this situation, we are limiting one designated care partner to pediatric patients and critically ill/disabled/cognitively challenged patients only. All other ED patients will not be permitted a designated care partner. These changes only apply to both our Sarnia and Petrolia EDs and does not apply to our hospital in-patient units.

The situation will be re-assessed regularly and any future changes to our ED designated care partner policy will be communicated.

We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we navigate the challenges from the recent wave of COVID-19 in our community.

Bluewater Health has been operating under a no visitor* policy since the beginning of the pandemic.

Bluewater Health currently has 15 COVID-positive patients in hospital.

*A designated care partner is defined as someone identified by the patient, usually on admission, who supports the patient during the hospital stay/visit assisting with care, comfort, and emotional support.
*A visitor is defined as someone not identified by the patient, who is visiting the patient for social purposes and not assisting with patient care.
