Exciting Next Step in Enhancing Patient Care in Lambton County
SARNIA & PETROLIA – July 27, 2021 – Bluewater Health is marking an exciting next phase in
the establishment of a helipad at the Sarnia hospital to support the region’s most critical patients.
Early construction is slated to begin this week, which includes geo-technical surveys and soil sampling.
During the 2019/2020 fiscal year, Bluewater Health transferred almost 400 people – from either the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, or the Maternal/Infant/Child Unit – to hospitals providing highly specialized care. "In emergency medicine, speed can mean the significant difference between good outcomes and bad, and even life or death,” said Dr. Mike Haddad, Chief of Staff. “An on-site helipad provides fast access to Ontario’s top trauma centres, burn centres, and neonatal intensive care units."
In March 2021, Lambton County Council approved funding up to 50 percent of the capital cost of the helipad project, as part of its 2021 budget. “We are excited to see construction of the helipad get underway, and are proud to support the project,” said Lambton County Warden, Kevin Marriott. “The addition of the on-site helipad at Bluewater Health will undoubtedly benefit the community and the health of all Lambton County residents.”
As the hospital’s operating budget does not cover the cost of the helipad, Bluewater Health Foundation is seeking to raise an additional $400,000 for the project.
When construction is finalized, the helipad will be located on Bluewater Health’s property, partially on the running track. The St. Clair Catholic District School Board sold the property to Bluewater Health in 2016 – the land was purchased for future hospital growth opportunities. The track is now at its end-of-life and will no longer be available for public use in the fall 2021.
The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) is currently undergoing the redevelopment of the athletic field at Great Lakes Secondary School, which will include a new eight-lane running track, field events, artificial turf football/soccer field, and grass practice soccer field. This facility will benefit LKDSB academic and extra-curricular activities, and LKDSB looks forward to making the facility available through the community use of schools rental process. The redevelopment project is expected to be completed in late fall 2021.
Bluewater Health allowed the Sarnia Athletics Southwest Track and Field Club use of the track over the last several years. They look forward to starting a new season at the state-of-the-art running track at Great Lakes Secondary School in the fall.
Throughout the planning phases, Bluewater Health has committed to engaging key stakeholders, including neighbours, the Hanna Memorial Elementary School community, the Lambton-Kent District School Board, City of Sarnia, County of Lambton, and the Sarnia Athletics Southwest Track and Field Club. A flight path study was also conducted in partnership with Transport Canada and ORNGE Air Ambulance.
