New Lullaby Program Rolls Out at Hospital

Brahm’s Lullaby now celebrates each new birth at Bluewater Health

SARNIA & PETROLIA – March 3, 2020 Starting today, occasionally and at any given time, a sweet-sounding classic children’s melody will be played over the intercom system at Bluewater Health for all to hear.

It is part of a new tradition at the hospital that acknowledges a special time for families: the arrival of their new bundle of joy. The overhead paging system heard throughout the hospital will now mark the birth of each baby by playing a five-second recording of Brahms’ Lullaby softly by chimes.  The music will be initiated by a member of the care team through a push button located at the Maternal Infant Child nursing station.

“We feel this program will be an uplifting and gentle reminder to everyone that a new life has entered the world,” says Krista Turner, Manager, Maternal Child Health unit. “The concept is to remind staff, patients and visitors of the joy and beauty of new beginnings.”

Bluewater Health delivers approximately 1,100 babies each year, so the lullaby will be played on average two or three times per day. The staff of the Maternal Infant Child department, with support of many throughout the hospital, have been the driver behind this initiative as a way to connect parents, and their joy, to the broader hospital community.

One of the most famous and recognizable melodies in the world, used by countless parents to sing their babies to sleep, Brahms’ Lullaby is a popular lullaby. First published in 1868, “The Lullaby” was dedicated to Brahms’ friend Bertha Faber on the occasion of the birth of her second son. “The Lullaby” was first performed in public on December 22, 1869, in Vienna, Austria with Louise Dustmann singing and Clara Schumann on piano.
