Surgeries and Procedures Resume Gradually at Bluewater Health

Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - 2:06pm

SARNIA & PETROLIA – May 19, 2021 – Today, the Ontario government lifted its directive issued in April which restricted elective and non-urgent surgeries and procedures during wave 3 of the pandemic. As such, Bluewater Health is moving forward with a plan to gradually resume non-emergent and non-urgent surgeries in accordance with Ontario Health criteria.

Non-urgent surgeries were paused when the province’s health system was strained by a surge in hospitalizations of patients with COVID-19 and in particular in its ICUs. Patients were transferred to hospitals with ICU capacity, and Bluewater Health received 21 patients from London and the Greater Toronto Area. The surge has now slowed and the capacity pressures have improved.

Over the coming days, the hospital will begin rescheduling surgeries and procedures that are not expected to require inpatient resources, working closely with Ontario Health to plan this work.

Patients will be notified of opportunities to reschedule surgeries and other appointments. Those who are waiting for surgery will hear directly from their physician’s/surgeon’s office.

In developing a plan for the restoration of services, all hospitals are using an ethical framework designed by the Ontario government to prioritize patient care. Resuming scheduled hospital-based care for patients waiting for treatment has to be very carefully weighed with the overriding need to ensure Ontario hospitals can maintain capacity to be ready for any surge in COVID-19 patients.

Bluewater Health will provide updated public information as soon as possible through local media as well as social media channels. In the meantime, current COVID-19 policies and procedures, including visitor restrictions, remain in place, and residents are reminded to seek care for urgent or emergent health concerns.
