Sarnia Lambton District Stroke Centre

Bluewater Health, Sarnia is designated as the District Stroke Centre for Sarnia-Lambton and is part of the Southwestern Ontario Stroke Network. The Southwestern Ontario Stroke Network is 1 of 11 Stroke Networks in Ontario. As a District Stroke Centre, we provide services based on stroke best practice. We are committed to offering ongoing education and training to help ensure high quality stroke services and programs are offered in hospital and in our community.

Patients who are having signs of a stroke are brought to Bluewater Health, Sarnia by Emergency Medical Services (EMS). We offer patients an emergency stroke assessment, which includes a brain scan and if appropriate we can provide the clot busting drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). We can also assess patients for their eligibility to have a clot removal surgery called Endovascular Treatment (EVT) . Patients who are eligible for EVT are transferred to London Health Sciences Centre, University Hospital, for the procedure.

Bluewater Health, Sarnia is also part of the Ontario Telestroke Program. As a Telestroke referring site, physicians in the emergency department have immediate, 24/7 access to neurologists with expertise in stroke care who can support both the assessment and treatment of patients experiencing acute stroke.

Once emergency assessment and treatments are complete, patients may be referred or admitted to one or more of the following services:

Secondary Stroke Prevention Clinic
Stroke Unit Care
Community Reintegration Program
