Day Surgery is designed to meet the short-term care needs of patients awaiting surgical procedures. The Pre-Admission Surgical Clinic staff will have advised you which medications you are permitted to take on the day of your surgery with small sips of water. Do not eat, drink or swallow anything after midnight unless instructed otherwise. If you are diabetic, follow your doctor’s guidelines about insulin. Please shower the morning of your surgery and remove your nail polish, make-up, and any body piercing jewelry. Plan to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
Opthomology procedures such as cataract surgeries are completed in the Pat Mailloux Eye Centre, located at Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital (CEEH) of Bluewater Health in Petrolia.
Please bring the following items with you to the hospital:
- Photo identification;
- List of allergies;
- All prescription medications; and
- Containers for contact lenses, glasses or dentures.
If you are staying overnight:
- Toiletries and other personal items. *please note these items are to be brought in AFTER your admission to the unit in which you are staying overnight.
Upon arrival at the hospital, please register with Patient Registration. Please arrive two hours before the time of your surgery unless instructed otherwise. If your surgery or procedure is done on an outpatient basis and requires sedation you must have someone to accompany your home from the hospital or your procedure may be cancelled.
Once in Day Surgery, you will be given a hospital gown to change into. The nurse will review your medical history and take your temperature, blood pressure and pulse. An IV is often started before you enter the Operating Room. The nurse may have more medications to give you prior to your surgery.
Please inform the staff if you are experiencing "flu-like" symptoms or have a cough or cold.
You may have visitors while you are waiting for your surgery. Visitors may not go with you when you are moved to the Operating Room unless directed so by staff, however an adult will usually be asked to accompany their child. Language translators and interpreters are permitted to accompany you as well.
Staff will inform you about how long your surgery will last and approximately what time you will be able to go home. Please share this information with your family or friends. If you will be staying in the hospital overnight, staff will direct your family to a waiting area, and keep them informed of your recovery following surgery.
Before you are discharged, staff may provide you with information to assist you after surgery, including:
- Incision care;
- Your diet;
- Activity level;
- Medications;
- When to call the doctor;
- Who to call with questions; and
- Follow up appointments.
